Columbia NY Quidditch Mini-tournament

uncaughtsnitch:

All right, so this weekend I went to the NY Mini-Tournament hosted by Columbia. The field that they used was really small and surrounded by concrete. There were also trees in the middle of the field which sucked for the players. The rain was horrible so I had to find a way to stay dry while I watched the games and took some notes, so I ended up watching the games from the Mathematics building. Before I start, I just want to mention that Columbia did a great job hosting the tournament, and that they should be proud of what they did!

The first match was between Macaulay Honors College and NYU. Macaulay seemed to be missing a few players, such as their keeper, Vincent Wong. NYU came out strong and they used what looked like a clutter offense. Macaulay came out strong as well, and their beaters were a lot more aggressive, which seemed a bit out of their comfort zone. The game was close as all their games have been in the past. There weren’t many big hits as I expected but Macaulay’s chasers still lacked physicality. It especially did not help that their most physical player wasn’t there. I did notice Raj Basak’s defense was phenomenal! Macaulay’s replacement keeper, Max Rief, played tremendously well as he made some huge stops for the Marauders. Macaulay’s passes weren’t great. They could have had so many more points if their passes were better. Beaters got distracted with maintaining bludger control, allowing some easy quick scores for NYU. Daunte Close played very well for NYU, helping his team on offense as well as playing strong defense. Anthony Boccardi also played well. Michael Sullivan started to help NYU pull away with two quick scores towards the end of the match. NYU deserves a lot of credit for the defense they played, forcing Macaulay to make some tough passes and really protecting their hoop zones. The snitch was caught off the pitch by NYU, leading to their win. The snitch in this game wasn’t too great. She seemed to be a novice snitch, but this was a small tournament so big-name snitches weren’t around to help out.

The next match was Columbia vs Stony Brook. Stony Brook played impressively, really dominating the entire match, but Columbia was fairly new. Plus, they didn’t have enough players for a full team so they had to borrow players. Nothing much I can really say but that this was just a Stony Brook-dominated match. Nick Beacher, Carlos Diaz, and Ozan Akpinar dominated the chaser game. It was just a scoring frenzy for Stony Brook. Stony Brook won 150 - 50 , with the snitch grab by Columbia. The snitch this game was a sneaky little bastard, probably the best one at the tournament. Hopefully this will develop some interest for Columbia and their team and help the team grow a bit more.

The next match was Stony Brook vs. Macaulay, and this was Stony Brook’s real test. Stony Brook came out fast with Carlos Diaz leading the way with two quick scores, and, from that point on, Stony Brook never looked back. They would continue to outplay Macaulay offensively and defensively. However Macaulay came out a bit more physically this game with Raj Basak, Shenuque Tissera and Max Rief playing some decent defense, making some big hits and tackles for their teams. Shenuque played well as a beater, no longer donning the yellow headband as Macaulay’s seeker, but it seems like this kid can play any position. Jenna Jankowski also played a strong game beating, she was surprisingly physical and not afraid to give out hits. Macaulay really missed him as a seeker for they did not have a snitch grab the whole day. Dyaln Faughey gave Macaulay a consistent and strong beater presence throughout the game. Nick Beacher took command of Stony Brooks chasers and played an outstanding game showing that he can be a strong leader on the pitch. Daniel Brown played an outstanding beater game as well. I don’t think he ever lost the bludger, and he helped solidify Stony Brook’s defense. Stony Brook really came together and played extremely well, outplaying Macaulay in all aspects of the game. They should be so proud of their victory; the future of Stony Brook Quidditch is looking bright. I think the outcome was 100-50 Stony Brook?

The next match was NYU vs. Columbia, and NYU just brought the heat on Columbia. Again, it’s just a learning experience for Columbia, but hopefully they will be able to grow from here. They did a great job hosting the tournament. There were some great matches, and, hopefully, next time, the teams will all get to play against one another.

Overall it was a great day of quidditch! All the teams played well and Columbia deserves a lot of credit hosting this! I can’t wait for the next tournament! If any players want me to critique their game personally just send me a message, and I’d be happy to give you my thoughts!

That’s not creepy at all.

C’mon, you must’ve been a Snitch at the tournament. You’d have to be a douche to have come and not offered to Snitch.

And I’d definitely be interested in some constructive critique in my beater play, NYU #99.

Though I still find it all mad creepy.

This is ridiculous and inaccurate - cover all of the kids in blankets as well and have them rolling into each other and making random noises and shit and THEN it’ll be our Actor’s Instrument class.

I’m so not a Chaser.

Today at Quid practice, the last scrimmage of the day was a quick “only girls as chasers, guys as beater or keeper” game. I was reminded why I always wear the sheggings (a la Dan Hanson) because today, trying to take advantage of the warmer weather, I just wore shorts— My knees hate me. Or what’s left of them anyway.

Plus, after the pre-practice power hour (not beer— extra training exercises), I was already in a tired place. So after all that and THEN constant running and hitting people and getting hit for 3 more hours… buuugghh. Dead.

The game only went to 30, but we won. :) I made the first two and had a pretty little assist on the final one. I play smart, but the physical and coordination stuff— not so much. Maybe I’d be a beast if I had wide receiver gloves, because my main issue is catching the ball and being able to turn it around to pass or score quickly.

So I know now that I kind of hate life playing purely Chaser, but I wouldn’t be too horrid if our team needs to sub me in the satisfy the gender rule (which we already have issues satisfying, and next semester we will only have 2 girls).

Still though - today’s practice was legit. And I’m proud of myself for showing up to the optional power hour too. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t come home and go:

Then wake up four and half hours later.
